The past year and a half has been pretty great for Kerry Washington, and she knows it.
“I’m the luckiest broad in Hollywood now,” the “Scandal” and “Django Unchained” star tells Elle magazine in its June issue, which also marks her first major fashion mag cover. “To be the lead actor on ‘Scandal’ and to be in the highest-earning Tarantino movie — I don’t get to ask for more.”
Washington says she was the “kooky theater kid, silly and goofy and academic,” when she was growing up, telling the magazine that before getting into acting as a teenager, she figured she would become a clinical psychologist. She now looks for projects that keep her on her toes.
“I’m not drawn to work that I think is going to be provocative for other people, but I am drawn to work that is provocative to me,” she says in the cover shoot video below. “… I guess really the right word is I’m drawn to work that challenges me.”
Washington also enjoys some of the perks of stardom. “I found out I enjoy the process” of getting ready for a red carpet, she says. “All these people show up at my house, they all have kits, someone has dresses. And it’s like, Let’s have fun. It’s not all about me. We’re able to create stories on the red carpet.”
