When “The Big Bang Theory” wrapped up Season 5 last year, our favorite nerds were all wrapped up in a wedding and a mission to space. For Thursday (May 16) night’s season finale, things won’t be quite as grand in scope, but there will still be plenty of relationships tested.
Chief among those relationships is Penny and Leonard’s. Just as the two have reached a high point, Leonard is faced with the difficult decision of whether to leave Penny for four months for an enticing job offer overseas.
“TBBT” executive producer Steve Molaro tells Entertainment Weekly, “Leonard and Penny are really in the best place that they’ve been in their relationship. They have just been magic this season. And he doesn’t want to do anything that will screw that up.”
Molaro also tells EW that Sheldon takes news of his roommate’s potential departure harder than Penny deoes. Not only does the job offer make Sheldon jealous, he’s also worried how he’ll get by without Leonard. “Sheldon relies on [Leonard],” Molaro says. “Sheldon doesn’t say it too often, but Leonard is Sheldon’s best friend, and Sheldon really does care about Leonard even f it doesn’t always appear that way on the surface.”
Though the finale, entitled “The Bon Voyage Reaction,” isn’t as momentous as the year prior, Molaro does tease that “one of the characters does have a major breakthrough, and there is a watershed moment in the episode that we’re really excited about.”
“The Big Bang Theory” airs its Season 6 finale Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
