Wolf Blizter got himself in a bit of an awkward situation during his coverage of the recent Oklahoma tornado. During an interview with Rebecca Vitsmun, a survivor of the tornado, the CNN host repeatedly said she was “blessed” to be alive. Finally she had to stop him and admit that she is an atheist.
“You’re blessed. Brian your husband is blessed,” Blitzer says in the above clip. “We’re happy you’re here. You guys did a great job. I guess you got to thank the Lord, right? Do you thank the Lord for that split second decision?”
Vitsmun pauses before saying, “I … I … I’m … I’m actually an atheist.”
“Oh you are? Alright,” Blitzer responds, both parties laughing awkwardly. “But you made the right call.”
Just another example of why religion and reporting should be two separate things, and religious belief shouldn’t be assumed. At least there were no hard feelings, at Vitsmun says, “I don’t blame anybody for thanking the Lord.”
