An ad for Cheerios that features an interracial couple and their daughter has brought forth a wave of hate speech online. Because it features an interracial couple.
The ad, called “Just Checking,” went up on YouTube Tuesday (May 28). A little girl asks her mom if Cheerios are good for your heart. Mom, who’s white, gives her some standard ad copy about whole grains and lower cholesterol. Dad, who’s African-American, wakes up from a nap on the couch with a pile of cereal over his heart.
Cute, right? Well, not to legions of people apparently unaware that it’s 2013 and that there are several million interracial married couples in the United States. Comments on the video were so vitriolic that Cheerios turned them off on Thursday.
The resulting publicity, however, has resulted in the video taking off. As of this post it was approaching a million views. No other video on the brand’s YouTube page has even 200,000 views.
A Cheerios spokeswoman says in a statement that “Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all.”
