The show’s eight-episode first season aired last fall and was produced in partnership between UK’s BBC One and US cable network Cinemax. The BBC opted not to continue its involvement back in November of last year and the show was essentially canceled.
But Cinemax has apparently been exploring alternative ways to keep the show alive, and now Deadline is reporting “Hunted” creator Frank Spotnitz is developing the spinoff miniseries “Sam Hunter” for the network.
The four-hour event will follow the continuing adventures of George’s character, private espionage agent Sam, who is on the run from her former employer while trying to protect her young daughter.
After the “Hunted” cancellation, George moved on to a starring role in ABC’s horror soap pilot “Gothica,” but the show was not picked up to series, freeing her up once again for “Hunted.”
Deadline also notes that Cinemax’s more direct role in developing the show’s new incarnation will allow Spotnitz greater creative freedom and the opportunity to tailor the show more specifically to premium cable standards.
