Despite the gruff, inappropriate side of him that he frequently shows the public, Russell Brand is one of the most intelligent comedians around. He took to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” talk show to discuss his new comedy tour “Messiah Complex,” but apparently those who were there to speak to him didn’t get the memo that Brand is a celebrity to take seriously.
Co-host Mika Brzezinski got the interview off on the wrong foot by making a point of how she has no idea who Brand is. During the rest of the eight minute segment, she and panelists Katty Kay and Brian Shactman proceed to mock Brand’s accent, talk about him like he wasn’t in the room and call him names like “Willy.” Finally Brand seemingly has enough, reprimands the trio for their manners and then showcases how he believes professional news anchors should act.
“Is this what you all do for a living? Well let me help you: I’m here to promote a tour called ‘Messiah Complex.’ It’s here for the people of America. I want the people of America to come and see me do stand up. Go to RussellBrand.TV where you can purchase tickets to see me,” Brand says. “These people, I’m sure, are typically very, very good at their job. You’re conveying news to the people of America? People of America, we’re going to be okay. Everything’s alright. These are your trusted anchors.”
When Brzezinski continues to refer to Brand in the third person, he snaps at her, “What’s wrong with your manners? Be polite.”
“Look beyond the superficial. That’s the problem with current affairs. You forget about what’s important. You allow the agenda to be decided by superficial information,” Brand says. “What am I saying? What am I talking about? Don’t think about what I’m wearing. These things are redundant, superficial.”
Then, in true Brand fashion, he ends the interview by calling Brzezinski a “shaft grasper.”
