NBC launched a summer singing competition show Monday (June 10) called “The Winner Is … “, which was a weird combination of “The Voice” battle rounds, “1 vs. 100” and “Deal or No Deal.”
There are two singers who each sing a song of their choosing. Then a panel of 101 music people — DJs, singers, music teachers, music bloggers, YouTube sensations — vote on who is going to advance. But there’s a twist. If you think you lost the battle, you can take money and leave the competition. If you think you won, it behooves you to stay because if you make it to the season finale, you can win $1 million.
There are fairly dissimilar acts going up against each other, with the first battle consisting of “Nessum Dorma” vs. “Lady Marmalade.” Their votes went 68 to 33, with $10,000 on the line. Neither took the money and “Marmalade” lady went home.
You don’t have to be a solo act, either. The second battle had a trio of sisters singing “Domino” versus a pair of brothers on “More Than Words” (the brothers won, for the record).
This was only the first round, so the dollar amount between dueling acts never got over $10,000, but in subsequent weeks the stakes will get higher and higher. Will you be tuning in?
