Sorry, “Wedding Crashers” fans, but it’s looking like “The Internship” isn’t going to be the latest, greatest comedy from Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. The reviews are in, and critics have been less than kind to the new movie.
The biggest complaint about the film is the fact that it is such a thinly disguised Google commercial. “Here’s why Google is so successful: It’s figured out a way for Twentieth Century Fox to make a two-hour Google commercial disguised as a summer comedy. ‘The Internship’ is nominally a vehicle for Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, but make no mistake: Every frame of this film testifies to the grand hipster chic of the world’s largest Internet company,” The Boston Globe writes. It goes on to say that the movie is “pretty entertaining” despite the fact that it is “obvious, predictable, dopey, sentimental.”
At least Wilson and Vaughn are said to be their usual funny selves, and the Associated Press feels the comedy does hit some genuine notes. “As corny and obvious as the script, co-written by Vaughn and Jared Stern, can be, there’s a sliver of realism here too — a few serious lines, painfully true, about the state of the job market for young people,” its review reads.
But for those fans clinging to the hope that this movie will be the next “Wedding Crashers,” that doesn’t seem like it’s what they will be getting. “While Vaughn and Wilson were hilarious in 2005’s ‘Wedding Crashers,’ those expecting this to be ‘Google Crashers’ are in for a rude awakening. ‘The Internship’ is closer to Dude, Where’s My Job?” USA Today writes.
The Los Angeles Times sums up the problems with the film by saying “it’s a one-liner forged into a two-hour joke.”
“The Internship” currently is rated 32 percent rotten on Rotten Tomatoes. But hey, at least it features a Quidditch game.
