Oakland Athletics’ outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is your 2013 Home Run Derby winner. He annihilated the first round, hitting 17 home runs. The next-closest competitors had eight in Round 1.
Round 2 saw Bryce Harper advance to the finals by hitting eight dingers to match his eight from the first round, while Cespedes had just six (but giving him 23 total). The two faced off in Round 3, with the Nationals’ outfielder hitting eight and Cespedes sending nine into the bleachers.
Cespedes’ 32 homers total ties him for third for the all-time number of homers hit in a single derby (minus swing-offs).
As always, there was a charitable aspect to the derby. In 2013, MLB and Chevrolet donated $3,000 for every regular home run and $23,000 for every gold ball hit for a home run (the gold ball is used once a player reaches nine outs in each round).
