Gyllenhaal recently had to bow out of playing one of the two princes in the irreverent spin on famous fairy tale characters. Chris Pine remains in place for the other prince alongside a sterling ensemble including Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt and Tony winner James Corden. Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) is directing and Disney is planning a holiday 2014 release. Deadline reported the news.
Magnussen may not be as big a name as Gyllenhaal, but he brings strong credentials to the part — which heavily combines music and comedy. Magnussen broke out as a theater star with a hilarious performance in this year’s Tony winner for Best Play, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.” He’s also appeared in the indie films “The East” and “Damsels In Distress” and had a memorable arc (hint: it involved a bathtub) on the last season of “Boardwalk Empire.”
