It turns out that no one was more surprised by DJ Khaled‘s surprise marriage proposal to Nicki Minaj than the rap goddess herself, but in a new interview, Minaj has revealed that it was never meant to be taken seriously.
“I was shocked just like the rest of the world, and I was cracking up laughing with the rest of the world, because Khaled is a master at what he does,” Minaj told Funkmaster Flex on his radio show on Monday (July 29). She also admitted the two haven’t even talked about the stunt yet.
“Nobody in my real life took it seriously. Everybody just hit me like, ‘LOL. Yo, Khaled is crazy.’ Khaled is my brother, and Khaled was not serious with that d*** proposal, ya’ll,” she continued. “Please let it go. He was kidding. He’s not attracted to me. He doesn’t like me. We’re brother and sister.”
So what was the point of Khaled’s entire ruse, which included the rapper popping the question in a heartfelt video on MTV and subsequent comments on the seriousness of his offer? Good old publicity, of course.
The entire scheme was devised to promote the rapper’s single “I Wanna Be With You,” which features Minaj and will be on his upcoming album “Symptoms of Success,” in stores Sept. 24.
