Many fans were intrigued when news broke that Shailene Woodley‘s role in the upcoming blockbuster “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” was cut completely. She had already finished filming all her scenes as Mary Jane Watson, but in order to streamline the story her entire role was taken out with the intention of using it in the third movie.
“Mary Jane was in four scenes — four scenes in the whole film, and it didn’t make sense,” Woodley said in an interview with Movies.com. “They’re introducing so many new characters. It really didn’t make sense to introduce such a vital character to the comic books in a movie that had so much else going on, so they’re holding off for future films.”
But when it comes to those future films, Woodley might not be reprising the role due to her commitment to the upcoming “Divergent” movie trilogy. “Well, it wouldn’t make sense, there’s no screenplay for it, by the time they shoot it it’ll be so many years from now,” Woodley said. “But it’s not a bad thing. [People look at it] like a negative thing, but it wasn’t and I think it was a very smart move on Sony’s behalf.”
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” — minus Woodley — hits theaters on May 2, 2014.
