Sylvester Stallone is set to return to the role of Rocky Balboa for the seventh time in a proposed upcoming spin-off film, “Creed.”
Deadline reports that MGM is prepping the spin-off to focus on the grandson of Apollo Creed, Rocky’s boxing rival played in the earlier films by Carl Weathers. “Fruitvale Station” star Michael B. Jordan is “in early talks” to appear as the grandson, with Stallone returning as a now retired Balboa.
Creed’s grandson will be portrayed as a young man granted a privileged upbringing thanks to his grandpa’s boxing winnings, therefore eliminating any need to follow in any footsteps into the ring. However, he feels a natural urge and turns to Rocky for mentorship, though the boxer is out of the sport completely and not eager to return.
“Fruitvale Station” director Ryan Coogler is set to direct the film, as well as co-write with Aaron Covington. Beyond his key role, Stallone is attached as producer.
