Based on the trailer alone, it may be the role Tom Hanks was born to play. The actor stars with Emma Thompson in Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” which tells the story of “Mary Poppins” author P. L. Travers.
Thompson takes on the role of Travers as she negotiates with Walt Disney (Hanks) to turn her story into a movie. The film follows Travers through production of “Mary Poppins,” and includes flashbacks to her childhood in Australia. What Disney learns through working with the author is that Mary Poppins didn’t come to save the children she cares for, but rather their father, Mr. Banks, who was based on her own dad.
Hanks absolutely looks the part of Walt and though he has a certain magic about him, the character is not without flaws. While some may expect Disney to be portrayed as perfect, he comes across as very human in the trailer, as does Travers.
“Saving Mrs. Banks” also stars B. J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman as the famed Sherman Brothers, who wrote the songs featured in “Mary Poppins.” It will see a limited release December 13, before landing in theaters everywhere December 20. Check out the trailer below:
