Though he hasn’t appeared in an NBA game since 2010, an official retirement announcement from Allen Iverson is expected in the coming days.
On Wednesday (Aug. 21), SlamOnline.com reports that the former Philadelphia 76ers will make his statement shortly, according to a source close to Iverson. The 38-year-old last played professionally in Turkey in 2011 and has spent the past few years trying to get signed as a free agent.
The source alleges that, with his basketball days now behind him, Iverson hopes to place his energy on his children and his business endeavors. “He loves his fans more than anyone,” the source says. “He loves how they ask for his return constantly, on the streets and on the internet. But now that they know it’s not happening, he can just focus on his future endeavors.
“He had a magnificent career, and he enjoyed every minute of it,” the source adds. “He enjoyed the places basketball took him, he enjoyed the camaraderie with his teammates and he especially enjoyed that his job was playing the game that he loved.”
In the recent years, Iverson has made headlines more for his off-court antics, especially regarding his contentious divorce proceedings.
Do you think the time is right for Iverson to officially walk away?
