Yes, you read that right.
Reports indicate that the drama from CBS TV Studios will be a medical soap set in New York City. Somehow, this will all be inspired by “The Wizard of Oz.” CBS is entirely serious about this, apparently.
The project comes from “Elementary” executive producers Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman, with a pilot script to be written by Emily Fox (“Ghost Whisperer”). No details have been released about how (or why) characters like Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion might fit in.
“The Wizard of Oz” was originally published by L. Frank Baum in 1900 and has been the inspiration for numerous film and television adaptations for more than a century. The most famous of these, the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland, is coming up on its 75th anniversary.
How could a medical soap channel “Oz” characters? Considering that the traits of Dorothy’s companions — lacking a brain, heart or courage — are normal human issues, they could form the crux of the story. It’s pretty easy to imagine doctors who are too stupid to practice medicine, doctors who feel no empathy for their patients, and doctors too afraid to perform effectively.
The big question is: How does Toto fit in to all of this?
