Van Dyke was driving on the 101 freeway when his Jaguar somehow caught on fire. Although the actor seems to have pulled over on his own, a passerby had to help the 87-year-old man get out of the vehicle (as reported by TMZ).
Jason Pennington, another driver on the highway at the time, saw Van Dyke’s car filling with smoke and pulled over to help. He was able to open the driver’s door and help the actor to safety. The engine fire responsible for the smoke subsequently destroyed the car.
Fortunately, Dick Van Dyke seems to have been just fine after his frightening experience. He did not receive any medical treatment and simply returned home with his wife when she was able to come get him.
