What’s more surprising than Tywin Lannister finally admitting this son Tyrion Lannister might have been right during his time as acting Hand of the King? How about Maester Pycelle finally revealing the man who he really is? Fortunately for “Game of Thrones” fans, both of those things happened during a deleted scene from Season 3.
The scene, which was originally shown during “Game of Thrones'” San Diego Comic-Con panel and will be released on the Season 3 Blu-ray, depicts Tywin calling Pycelle on his guise as a weak, biddable man. Pycelle had come to Tywin to try to get back on the Small Council, and only did so by showing his true colors.
But why hide his true nature? Because he doesn’t want anyone to look at him as any sort of competition. “So many flowers, my lord. Each wanting to grow the tallest, bloom the brightest,” he explains to Tywin while the Hand of the King is fishing. “Then one by one, sooner or later, they all get plucked. I don’t want to be the tallest or the brightest. I only want to remain in the garden until my time comes to return to the dirt.”
Then, as if there ever was any doubt, Pycelle made it clear his loyalty is to the Lannisters, not to the crown. “Since the time I convinced the Mad King to open his gates to you, I have served the interests of the house of Lannister unfailingly,” Pycelle argues to Tywin, explaining he chose House Lannister because “you have built the strongest house.”
“Game of Thrones” Season 4 premieres on HBO in Spring 2014.
