Mad Men” star Jon Hamm and “Parks and Recreation” star Amy Poehler weren’t crying in their beers over their respective losses at the 2013 Emmy Awards. Nope, they were partying it up with their fellow Emmy losers at Soho House.
“We figured that the winners get celebrated enough so we thought it was about time that the losers get celebrated,” Hamm tells E! News. “Poehler and I are friends from a long time ago and every year when we would lose the Emmy we would kind of wink at each other and call each other loser for the rest of the night.”
Hamm says the idea for the Emmy losers party — which raised $30,000 for charity by charging winners $1,000 entry fee — came about after he and Poehler both lost last year and found themselves having out at “Arrested Development” star Kristen Wiig’s hotel with a bunch of other losers.
“We called it the ‘Losers Lounge’ because nobody that was there won and it kind of stuck,” says Hamm. “We were like, ‘That was a really fun party. We should do that again, but we should do it bigger and better and invite our friends who aren’t going to win either and we’ll have a good time with it.'”
Not only did Emmy winners who wanted to join in the fun after the show have to donate to charity, but they also had to check their trophies at the door. Poehler’s BFF Tina Fey, was one such winner. She took home the statuette for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, “30 Rock.”
“Mad Men” was shut out at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards after receiving 12 nominations. Hamm was up for Outstanding Actor in a Drama, which went to “The Newsroom” star Jeff Daniels. Poehler was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy, but Julia-Louis Dreyfus won for “Veep.”
