Serena Williams got off to a shaky start in the U.S. Open championship match, making over a dozen unforced errors in the first two sets. She also could be seen expressing her frustration with the windy conditions on the court.
But Williams battled to defeat Victoria Azarenka in three sets, 7-5, 6-7 (6) and 6-1. It was a repeat of last year’s U.S. Open women’s final, when Williams also beat Azarenka in three sets.
This is Williams’ fifth U.S. Open championship, which ties it with the Australian Open and French Open as the Grand Slam tournies where Williams has the most titles — she has five at each of those three. This is her 17th overall Grand Slam title, with Williams having “only” won Wimbledom twice.
