It’s premiere week for most of the fall 2013 shows and that means that while old shows are returning and no new shows have been culled just yet, the primetime schedule is busy. Here are a few tips for navigating Wednesday night, Sept. 25.
“The Middle,” “Back in the Game” and “Revolution” are all premiering in the 8 p.m. hour, up against “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” and “The X Factor.” For what to watch live, we’d give the edge to “Revolution,” if only to see what was going on with the president of the United States hiding out in Guantanamo Bay all these years.
But if “Survivor” is your thing, it’s the first elimination at Redemption Island, so perhaps you should tune in there if you’re worried about getting spoiled as to who goes home.
“The Middle” and “Back in the Game” are definite DVRers. “The X Factor” is too and here’s why — the audition episodes are approximately 68 percent filler. If you DVR and use the fast-forward button, you can watch all the auditions of a two-hour episode in like 20 minutes. It’s great.
Moving to the 9 p.m. hour, it’s a one-hour “Modern Family” premiere up against two procedurals with the “Law & Order: SVU” and “Criminal Minds” premieres (and the second half of “X Factor,” but we already talked about that).
Most weeks, we’d say watch “Modern Family” live because that’s our favorite show in this hour. But the “SVU” premiere will continue its cliffhanger of a serial rapist holding Det. Benson at gunpoint. There’s a reason Mariska Hargitay has eight Emmy nominations for this role — this is an episode not to be missed.
Oh, and the “Capture” finale is airing on The CW. Just in case anybody watches that.
At 10 p.m., NBC is still showing the “SVU” premiere but has moved on to a child kidnapper. You might be more inclined to shift over your live viewing to “Nashville,” where Rayna James has just been in a car accident with Deacon. But “CSI” also has a big episode — Det. Brass’ daughter Ellie has been kidnapped.
We would say live-view “Nashville,” but definitely DVR “CSI” and the back half of “SVU.”
