Major spoilers ahead if you have yet to watch “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 10 episode 2, “Everybody’s Crying Mercy” …
Everyone at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital took a giant step (either forward or backward) in their relationships in Thursday (Oct. 3) night’s all-new “Grey’s Anatomy.” So who came out of the hour for the better, and who might have irrevocably damaged their relationships?
Meredith and Richard
After making the call that saved Richard’s life, Meredith was feeling pretty good about herself … until Richard refused to accept a feeding tube. He was proud, and wanted to eat food regularly. Unfortunately, his body wouldn’t let him, and he was slowly starving to death in front of everyone. Bailey wasn’t strong enough to stand up to Richard, and Meredith was being pulled in two directions … until intern Shane manned up and forced Webber to accept the tube.
Thankfully, Richard’s life was saved yet again, but he didn’t see it that way. Richard chose Meredith to be his power of attorney because he thought she would put aside emotion and make the right call. Meredith thought that meant Richard saw her as family, but this heartbreaking speech from him, it was clear Meredith didn’t understand at all: “I didn’t call you my family. I’m not your father. I chose you because I thought you could put emotions out of it and make the right call. Bailey was too weak but I thought I could trust you to not let them operate on me when I was all but dead. Not to bring me back to life, where I have to get my meals from a tube. I thought you wouldn’t be sentimental. I was wrong. I chose the wrong person.” Is their relationship damaged beyond repair?
Alex and Jo
Since all the interns were sleeping over at Alex’s house to grieve Heather, Alex and Jo had yet to … consummate their new relationship. They both weren’t sure when the right time to do it was since it had already taken so long. Alex wanted it to be special since Jo was just “some girl” (Awwww, Alex!), which of course Cristina made fun of him for before hitting him with this gem: “It will be special because she’s special.” These two crazy kids finally did the deed at the end of the hour, and it looks like this relationship is here to stay.
Cristina and Owen
In order to further make their clean break permanent, Cristina tells Owen they need to date other people. They need to try to get over each other. The painful look in Owen’s eyes as Cristina begs him to at least try? Heartbreaking.
Meredith and Derek
Thanks to Bailey (the baby, not the doctor), these two have not been able to sleep. They spent the entire hour in that hilarious yet pathetic daze that new parents who are deathly sleep deprived always seem to have. There were some great one-liners from both the new mom and dad as they sleep-walked through the episode, the best being from Derek to Meredith about Bailey being hungry: “My nipples are of no use to him.”
Arizona and Callie
Arizona was trying so hard to get Callie to forgive her infidelity this week. But it looks like the hurt Callie feels hasn’t lessened one bit. In fact, she’s been reflecting on why Arizona cheated: they weren’t happy, long before the affair occurred. Arizona wanted them to go to couples counseling, but Callie refused to go, saying Arizona should go on her own. Their issues stem from the plane crash, and Arizona needs to face that alone before they can even look at repairing their relationship. Is there any hope left for these two?
April and Jackson
After stressing out about her boards results, April has Jackson read her the news: she passed! She went in for a hug, and he gave her a high five … awkward. These two are still stuck in the limbo between friends and ex-lovers.
What’s on deck for next week’s “Grey’s Anatomy?” A gala! Well, a fundraiser to be more accurate. The storm took out a whole portion of the ER and the hospital needs to raise a ton of money to fix it and restock their dwindling supplies. And you know what a fancy party means: tons of drama! As if this show needed any more …
“Grey’s Anatomy” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
