Netflix has some big plans after its successes in 2013. In addition to putting out more original content TV series in 2014, the company is looking to add a focus on film as well.
CEO Reed Hastings revealed during Netflix’s third quarter earnings call that the company is looking to expand into movies in the future. Netflix already is delivering comedy specials and looking into documentaries, but a Netflix feature film could be on the pipeline.
“On the movie side, I’d keep my mind wide open to what those films would be and what they would look like,” chief content officer Ted Sarandos says, via Variety.
It’s pretty easy to see how Netflix is looking to follow in the path of HBO here. Interestingly, Netflix recently passed HBO in paid US subscribers, and it isn’t even matching HBO in the percentage of its overall global content spending that it’s pouring into original content.
Also confirmed on the call was the fact “Orange Is The New Black” is Netflix’s most watched original series. Meanwhile, “House of Cards” and the other originals were reportedly as popular as other “successful shows on cable and broadcast TV.”
