“Maintaining the temple, Dave, I’ve been maintaining the temple. I went to the doctor and he said, ‘You know those high blood sugar numbers you’ve been dealing with since you were 36? Well, you’ve graduated! You’ve got type 2 diabetes, my man,'” Hanks explains to Letterman with plenty of laughs. “Well, it’s controllable. Something’s going to kill us all, Dave.”
Apparently there is a way for Hanks to beat the disease, but it’s not one that he’s willing to try — and for good reason.
“My doctor said, ‘Look, if you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school, you will essentially be completely healthy and will not have type 2 diabetes,’ and then I said to her, ‘Well I’m going to have type 2 diabetes’ because there is no way I can weigh as much as I weighed in high school,'” he says. “I weighed 96 pounds in high school. I was a very skinny boy.”
