For the first time ever in the long history of the iconic MTV reality series, “The Real World” is changing up its format.
The new season of the long-running reality show will introduce a new twist after 21 years and 28 seasons: Cast members’ exes are brought in to live under the same roof in “The Real World: Ex-Plosion,” MTV announced on Wednesday (Nov. 13).
The season, airing in 2014, will start off just as any other “Real World” season — seven strangers are introduced to each other and will live together in a house in San Francisco. But in what is sure to be the most intense season yet, things take a dramatic turn when the exes of the original seven roommates surprisingly take the house by storm and move right in.
“We wanted to give our audience a fresh take on the series,” Susanne Daniels, MTV’s President of Programming, says. “We are excited about this season’s twists and unexpected turns.”
The roommates and the exes were both unaware of the twist, and things get complicated quickly as new relationships that started to brew before their exes arrived cause drama. The roommates find out very quickly that this season won’t be what they expected as loyalty is tested, tempers flare and romances sizzle and fizzle. While some exes rekindle relationships they long thought were over, others will continue to fight.
“We’re incredibly excited to throw a new huge twist into the ‘Real World’s’ 29th season by introducing a fresh dynamic to the relationships in the house,” Jonathan Murray, creator and executive producer, says. “The original seven cast members have no idea their exes will be moving in, which spurs drama, humor, excitement, unpredictability and many incredibly real situations that will resonate with our viewers.”
What do you think of the new twist? Are you excited to see what kind of drama the new format will stir up?
