One of the best things about the holiday season would have the be the music that comes along with it, which is why it’s so special when our favorite shows get in on the act and celebrate with a song.
As we get ready for Christmas, we thought we’d look back at some of our favorite holiday musical moments on some of our favorite shows. And no, this list isn’t just full of “Glee” — though it very easily could be.
‘Glee’ – ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’
However, speaking of the FOX hit, we’d be remiss if we didn’t include this special moment from Season 2 between Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss). This particular Christmas song always feels a bit rape-y when sung between a man and woman, but changing the context to two young gay guys at the onset of their relationship somehow felt charming.
‘Saturday Night Live’ – ‘I Wish It Was Christmas Today’
In the storied history of “SNL,” there have been many, many musical moments around the holidays to choose from. So why this one? Three small words: Tracy Morgan‘s dancing.
‘Ally McBeal’ – ‘River’
Similarly, there are plenty of musical moments to choose from when talking “Ally McBeal,” but this cover of Joni Mitchell‘s “River” from Robert Downey Jr.’s Larry late in the show’s run is tops for us. The holidays aren’t a time of joy for everyone and this song — and Downey Jr.’s performance of it — capture that sad fact perfectly.
‘Community’ – ‘Abed and Troy’s Jehoviah’s Witness Rap’
I mean, does much more need to be said about this? It’s just hysterical and perfect.
‘Star Wars Holiday Special’ – ‘Good Night, But Not Goodbye’
While calling this moment the “best” of anything might be a wild stretch, we just needed to point out that at one time, someone thought it was a good idea to have a “Star Wars” TV special for the holidays that featured barkeep Bea Arthur singing a song that has nothing to do with the holidays. Consider it our Christmas gift to you.
