For the first time in the brand’s history, Cheerios is airing a commercial during this year’s Super Bowl — and they’re taking the opportunity to make a bit of a statement.
In their 30-second spot, titled “Gracie,” the General Mills’ cereal revisits their 2013 ad “Just Checking,” which generated a bizarre backlash for featuring an interracial couple and their daughter.
In the new clip, the family shares a cute moment around the kitchen table, where dad uses Cheerios to explain to his little daughter that she’s got a baby brother on the way. It’s as sweetly humorous as the original commercial, with little Gracie proving to be a skilled negotiator. It doesn’t directly address the earlier controversy, perhaps making the biggest statement of all.
“Like millions of Americans, we just fell in love with this family,” Camille Gibson, vice president of marketing, tells the New York Times. “The big game provided another opportunity to tell another story about family love.”
Though the original ad was received by a flood of offensive, bigoted comments, it eventually racked up nearly 5 million views on YouTube.
