It wouldn’t be “Downton Abbey” without some drama, and Sunday’s (Jan. 12) episode comes with its own warning from PBS: “This week’s episode contains scenes which may not be suitable for all audiences, and has a parental guideline rating of TV-14, V.”
PBS has also released a clip of the next episode, which features Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) out for a ride with Lord Tony Gillingham (guest star Tom Cullen), who is currently attached to another woman, Mabel Lane Fox, whom Mary calls “the greatest heiress of the season.”
When Tony says that both sides are keen on the match, Mary says, “You may be surprised to hear that a match that is wanted so everyone can turn out to be extremely happy,” referring to herself and her late husband Matthew.
Gillingham says that Mary is lucky to have experienced a great love in her life, and she says she’s not sure about that.
“Matthew changed me. I loved him, but he changed me,” says Mary. “If I were as tough as I was before I met him, I bet I’d be happier now.”
Poor Lady Mary. Don’t harden back up, we like you softer.
“Downton Abbey” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on PBS.
