He tells the 2014 TCA press tour that “the format does not exist at the moment,” but they are working on it. What he does know is that it “will be making fun of things,” which he laughingly admits is a “fairly broad format.”
Oliver also turns serious for a minute when he thanks regular “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart for his help over the years.
“He has been invaluable over the last seven-and-a-half years of my life in almost everything,” says Oliver. “So I talked to him about this decision, and he’s been amazing. As a comedian, I’m almost allergic to sincerity, but he has been incredible.”
With that bit of sentimentality out of the way, Oliver was full of humorous bon mots, so here are his best lines from the panel:
- “This feels like a Congressional hearing. And I don’t think there’s any way to say that in a positive way.”
- “I set myself the achievable goal of just not destroying [‘The Daily Show’]. So the fact that it’s still there and Jon is still doing it, that I took that as a W in the ‘win’ column.”
- [Upon learning that Sarah Palin is doing a panel for the TCA breakfast the following morning] “Well, now I’m checking in. … That is incredible news. Sarah Palin at a breakfast bar. I think my life could just be over at that point, watching her spoon little cornflakes into a bowl. Oh, Sarah.”
- [On living in America] “America has — this has been a key seven-and-a-half years. I’ve arrived for the last years of President Bush’s administration. So it has — there are different things to make fun of. America has been very generous in what it has offered up as joke subjects over the years. And American politics in particular is a circus of crazy that is unparalleled around the world. And you can take that as both a compliment and an insult.”
