When “The Carrie Diaries” Season 2 finale bows on Friday (Jan. 31), fans will be left wanting more … without the knowledge of whether or not they’ll actually get more, since there still hasn’t been any news of a Season 3 renewal.
Executive producer Amy B. Harris tells Zap2it that regardless of the up-in-the-air status, she still planned the Season 2 finale like a season finale, and not a series finale. In other words, get ready to be left on a cliffhanger of sorts.
“My goal for this season was to end it in a way that blew up a lot of what was happening that we built to this season and to kick off everyone in a new way,” Harris says. “Everyone is kind of getting kicked out of their nests — sometimes for good and sometimes for bad — in graduating from high school. We have some surprisingly fun ways to launch people out in the world.”
So if the Season 2 finale does end up being a series finale, will fans be left in a lurch? “I planned it as a season finale with the idea that we blew up a ton of stuff and have a lot of wonderful ideas on how to launch everyone’s stories for a Season 3,” Harris says. “But if it is the last episode — and I really hope it isn’t — I don’t think we’ll leave people unsatisfied. But I certainly don’t want it to be the ending. I’m very excited to tell the stories that come next.”
As to whether or not “The Carrie Diaries” will be around to continue those stories, Harris is optimistically waiting for that renewal. “Please god yes,” Harris says with a laugh. “I’m hopeful we’ll get a third season. The numbers that we’re doing on Friday night are not surprising. We have a very young audience, and they tend not to be home on a Friday night — they’re watching it on DVR and Hulu and streaming and all of those numbers counted for us last year so I have to hope it’s the same for us this year.”
Harris is excited for fans to see the “meaningful” episode. “Our finale was shot in a location that was one of the most beautiful locations we’ve ever shot in — the TWA terminal at JFK,” Harris says. “It is truly spectacular. The location fits the theme of the show which is about arrivals and departures in a way, saying goodbye to things.”
“The Carrie Diaries” Season 2 finale airs Friday (Jan. 31) at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
