“I’m not 100 percent, that’s for sure, but if I waited until I was 100 percent, the Olympics would be over,” Costas said on a call to “Today” Monday morning. “So if the audience can put up with still a little bit of red eyes hiding behind the glasses, then I can put up with it for the next week, too.”
Because of the infected eyes, Costas had to relinquish hosting duties to Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira. His infection made it hard to see, and the bright studio lights made the condition worse. Costas was on set during Lauer’s Sunday-night broadcast, preparing for his Monday return.
“I’m glad to be back, and I want to thank Matt and Meredith for doing such a good job in filling in,” Costas said. “I owe [Matt] so many favors. That’s the worst part of the whole thing.”
The first announcement of Costas’ return came from the NBC Sports PR Twitter account on Sunday:

Audiences will see Costas’ eyes for themselves when he returns at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
