In the end, it was Canada that got the win with a final score of 1-0.
With the winner heading to the gold-medal match against Sweden on Sunday (Feb. 23) and the loser fighting for bronze against Finland on Saturday (Feb. 22), this definitely counted as an important game. The low-scoring game pointed out exactly how well-matched these two teams were.
The first period was scoreless as power plays failed and goalies kept their teams safe. It was only at the 1:41 mark in the second period that Canada’s Jamie Benn scored (with an assist from Jay Bouwmeester).
Going into the final period of regular play, Canada led 1-0. Strong defense marked this third period as well with numerous failed shots from each team. Unfortunately for the American team, the Canadians dominated the game at the end. Even pulling the goalie in the finale minute wasn’t enough to allow the US team to tie it.
Because of these results, the men’s hockey gold and silver will be fought for by Canada and Sweden, while Team USA goes for bronze against Finland.
