“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” is getting one of its coolest cameos yet in episode 13, “TRACKS”: Stan Lee. The Man himself will make a brief but funny appearance in Tuesday’s (Feb. 4) episode during an interaction with Coulson and Simmons.
“It’s a big moment for me,” Lee tells Zap2it of appearing in the ABC drama.
Ever since “X-Men,” Lee has appeared in every live-action movie based on Marvel comics. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe alone, he played Hugh Hefner in “Iron Man,” a man poisoned in “The Incredible Hulk,” Larry King in “Iron Man 2,” the man trying to pull Thor’s hammer with his truck in “Thor,” an elderly general in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” a man dismissing superheroes in “The Avengers,” a beauty pageant judge in “Iron Man 3″ and a man in a mental hospital in “Thor: The Dark World.”
Asked if he finally got a say in which Marvel character he played on “Agents of SHIELD,” Lee replies. “No, I never do. I’m asked to come to wherever a film is shot or a television series is shot, I go there, I do my thing, they thank me — if I’m lucky — and then I leave, and that’s about it.”
So he really didn’t have a say in those beautiful women flanking him in “TRACKS”? Lee still doesn’t really seem to understand their function, but is happy with them all the same.
“I don’t know how I happened to be with those two beautiful women, but I’m certainly not protesting,” he says.
Spoiler warning: At this point in the interview, Lee gives away his entire cameo appearance on the show, so proceed with caution.
“What happens is I’m with them and I see Agent Coulson and Simmons arguing. Agent Coulson seems to be yelling at Elizabeth Henstridge, and I don’t like that one bit for a man to yell at a woman that way!” Lee recounts. “So I get up indignantly and walk over to settle things, and these two girls come with me — I don’t know why, particularly, but the three of us walk over — and I have a few harsh words to say to Agent Coulson, and then I leave with the two young ladies following me, and that’s about the whole scene. I must say, it’s magnificently done.”
Though Clark Gregg‘s Agent Coulson was originally created just for the Marvel movies, he’s now become a comic-book character himself and, obviously, stars in his own TV series. Lee says he’s happy with the character’s transformation over the years.
“I’m a fan of everybody who does anything with a Marvel movie and does it well,” he says. “I think it is just so great that we have these episodes coming along, and I think they’re going to be better and better as we move along.”
“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
