In the season finale of ABC’s “Super Fun Night,” Rebel Wilson‘s character, Kimmie, has a tough decision to make: Should she try to make things work with her boss, Richard, with whom she shared a romantic kiss, or try to win back her boyfriend, James, who breaks up with her after he finds out about said kiss?
“At the start of the series Kimmie and her two friends were really like baby chicks just coming out into the world, and by the end of [Season] 1 my character has two guys who are interested in her and she doesn’t quite know how to deal with it all properly,” explains star and creator Wilson. “Kimmie knows that she has to choose one of them, so in the season finale she chooses who she thinks will be the best for her.”
Naturally, the action concludes “in true ‘Super Fun Night’ style with a huge musical number to the Queen song ‘Fat Bottomed Girls,’ which is amazing,” Wilson tells Zap2it. “It’s really cool. It’s very ‘Moulin Rouge’-y, how we do it. And it’s a really satisfying end to the season. There’s a lot that happens.”
Of course, just because Kimmie makes a decision doesn’t mean it’s the right one. “We obviously don’t leave everything done and dusted because myself and my showrunner, John Riggi, have plans for Season 2, but Kimmie is forced into a situation where she has to choose between the two guys and she does make her choice,” Wilson says.
“I don’t want to give it away, but I think she doesn’t quite know what’s going on because she’s never had a guy really interested in her and now she’s got two so she does get a bit flustered,” she continues. “Maybe she makes the right choice but maybe it’s wrong. She just does what her heart says at the time — and then the emotion is so intense that they all just burst into song.”
Wilson admits that the musical number was her idea. “I’m obsessed with musicals,” she says. “I think you can always tell the episodes I wrote because they are always musicals. In the pilot episode we did ‘Wicked’; in the Valentine’s Day episode we did ‘Phantom of the Opera’ stuff. It’s hard. Musical numbers take longer to film and require more effort so often people get scared off from them, but I love them so I’m always pushing for more music, more singing and dancing.”
