A new four-part documentary series on VH1 takes a look at just how influential hip hop music and culture have been on America, and it might be more than you think.
In “The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop,” musicians, actors, directors and even politicians speak to the changed that occurred in the wake of hip hop. Below are two videos that cover very different eras. One looks back on the first rap hit, “Rapper’s Delight,” while the other takes a look at hip hop’s role in politics.
The second clip especially spend time focusing on Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Vote or Die initiative to get out the youth and minority vote.
“The Tanning of America” premieres Monday (Feb. 24) at 11 p.m. ET and runs on consecutive nights until Thursday.
