WGN America’s spooky new series, “Salem,” doesn’t premiere until April. Since that’s way too long to wait to get our fill of the series’ supernatural take on the Salem witch trials, Zap2it decided to get you — and the stars — excited for the debut by subjecting them to our “Salem” Survey. (Check out Xander Berkeley’s here and Tamzin Merchant’s here.)
Up next is Iddo Goldberg, who plays Salem villager Isaac Walton on the new drama, premiering Sunday, April 20 at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT.
Read on to find out his current favorite album, whether he can name “Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s” best friend, and why he couldn’t have survived 1690s Salem.
Zap2it: Describe your character in 5 words.
Goldberg: Shamed, exiled, broken, angry, hopeful.
What three items would you take with you to a deserted island (or puritanical Salem)?
A copy of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” (might want to hand that out a bit). A picture of my wife. My copy of Future Island’s “In Evening Air” (and also something to play it on but THAT’S IT, I promise).
Could you have survived in the 1690s?
No, I have a really bad time with authority. I think I would have had some serious issues with how reserved people were. I would have probably tried to chill people out but probably failed. Couldn’t have stood by and watched the unfair treatment of people.
Which witch is which? Name the book/TV show/movie/play each witch is from. No cheating!
firstly, which witch is which? I like what you did there.
Glinda the Good Witch: “The Wizard of Oz”!!!
Hermione Granger: “Potter,” innit?!
Bonnie Bennett: Pass
Fiona Goode: Pass
Sabrina Spellman: “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.”
The White Witch: C.S Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” – BTW Tilda Swinton kills it! I mean KILLS IT.
Willow Rosenberg: “Buffy”!
Pick one: “The Witches of Eastwick,” “The Craft,” or “Practical Magic”
Was talking about this the other day and my immediate response was “Eastwick” but after my conversation I remembered there was some scary s*** in “The Craft.” Now, I can’t remember if was the acting, the story or the effects but it was scary.
If you could cast any spell, what would it be?
A delivery spell, in which all things I order from Amazon arrive immediately! Make that prime service look stupid. Oh and world peace of course, duh?! (but the Amazon thing is also very important).
Would you be a good witch or a bad witch?
I’m gonna say good witch but I have no idea what it’s like to possess that power. That’s what ruins people, isn’t it? Might go bad.
What’s the most surprising true fact you learned about the actual Salem witch trials?
I was shocked to learn that 19 people were hung. I thought it was much less. That’s a lot of people affected.
What’s the most challenging thing about starring in a show that’s both genre and period?
When working with a supernatural element on a period piece (first time for me), I think the main challenge is not over doing either sides of the balance. There’s always the temptation to play “the period” or “the magical element” but really these contrast one another really well regardless. Ultimately, like in any piece, all we as actors should really focus on is the character’s emotional journey. Leave the other stuff to smart folk.
