Brittany Daniel’s three year absence from BET’s “The Game” has finally been explained — and, sadly, it’s not a happy reason.
The actress tells People that in the summer of 2011, after experiencing terrible back pain, night sweats and flu-like symptoms, she was diagnosed with stage IV non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“It happened so suddenly,” she says. Soon after her diagnosis, she began chemotherapy and moved into her twin sister (and former “Sweet Valley High” co-star) Cynthia’s guest house with her mom.
“There is no way I would have ever gotten through this without my family,” she admits. “My family is everything to me and I feel like they saw me through this.”
Daniel originally wanted to keep her story private, but now that she’s healthy and cancer-free, she hopes her experience might help others. “I want to let people know it is absolutely possible to get through something like this,” she says. “I want people to know they are not alone.
After being written out of the hit series in Season 4, Daniel returned to “The Game” in episode 4 of Season 7, which aired March 18, as a series regular.
“The Game” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on BET.
