Warning: Do not keep reading if you have not watched the latest episode of “The Good Wife,” as this point contains major spoilers.
“The Good Wife” featured a shocking ending Sunday (March 23) when series regular Josh Charles abruptly exited the show when his character Will Gardner was shot by deranged client Jeffrey Grant (guest star Hunter Parrish).
It was a twist we absolutely did not see coming. It was not like when Dan Stevens left “Downton Abbey” and there had been rumblings for months about how he wanted off the show. This is something we had heard nothing about and has left us completely stunned and so sad for the characters.
It turns out, according to Deadline, that Charles asked to leave the show in Season 4 but he was convinced to stay on for Season 5 so that his character could be properly written off the show. That actually explains a lot about how this season has gone, since Alicia and Cary are off getting their own firm off the ground and Will happens to be a key piece to the Peter Florrick election fraud puzzle.
But wow. What a shocking turn of events. Kudos to the show for keeping it so quiet because we had no idea.
Where does this leave the show? Obviously this will affect Alicia in unimaginable ways, since just last week she and Will kind of started to thaw out with each other in New York but there were still so many unresolved feelings there.
And what will happen with Lockhart & Gardner? Will it dissolve? Will Diane perhaps join Florrick/Agos? There are so many possibilities, but one thing is for certain — Charles will be greatly missed on the show.
