Queen Latifah is heading to HBO. The actress plans to executive produce and star in a biopic about the life of Bessie Smith, an iconic blues singer from the 1920s and ’30s.
Latifah’s filmography is primarily filled with comedies and animated films, so it’s nice to see her go serious with HBO. She’s got a great partner too, as “Pariah” director Dee Rees is both writing and directing the film.
The movie is based on Chris Albertson’s biography “Bessie,” and of course Smith’s life story. No word yet on a prospective premiere date for the film. Meanwhile “The Queen Latifah Show” was recently picked up for a second season in syndication.
