“Pretty Little Liars” returns for its fifth season Tuesday (June 10) with “EscApe From New York,” which sees the four main girls plus newly returned Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) heading back to Rosewood after their harrowing adventure facing off with “A” in New York.
Pieterse tells Zap2it that in true Alison fashion, she brings a storm with her when she returns to Rosewood, seemingly from the dead.
“Coming back to Rosewood is really hard for Alison,” says Pieterse. “The girls aren’t sure if they can trust Alison, and Alison’s not sure if she can trust the girls. Basically, Alison brings in a tornado and wrecks Rosewood.
“There’s a lot that happens in the premiere that causes a rift between everyone,” she continues. “Alison has changed a lot, but there’s really only a few ways she knows how to survive and they’re not always the best. But so much goes on in the premiere, I think fans are going to love it. It throws them right into what is happening, I think we did a really cool job with it.”
But it isn’t just the premiere episode that is full of twists and turns — because duh, this is “Pretty Little Liars” we’re talking about.
“Everything we’ve filmed up to now in Season 5 has been quite shocking,” says Pieterse. “Things I didn’t think they would ever go for. There’s things you’ll see from Alison’s past, from when she disappeared, that I never thought would happen.”
In both exploring the year Alison was gone and her return to Rosewood, Pieterse tells us the watch-word of the season is “complicated” — complicated between Mona and Alison, who have “a very twisted connection”; complicated between Jenna and Alison, as Alison is trying to “prove so badly that she has changed”; and complicated between Emily, Alison and Paige.
“Obviously Emily and Alison have a history but there’s a complication with Paige,” says Pieterse. “Emily wants to believe that Alison has changed and everything’s good and that we’re all going to be OK, but at the same time, Alison is still up to a lot of her old antics and keeping peace between everyone is going to be Emily’s hardest job.”
She adds, “I think Alison has changed in a lot of ways, but she’s had a very complicated life and I think she’s always on the defensive, protecting herself. There’s a handful of things that need to happen for her to feel safe and we’re going to find out if those things will happen this season.”
“Pretty Little Liars” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
