When “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam abruptly departed “Fifty Shades of Grey” a month after he was announced to be playing the role of Christian Grey, the internet practically exploded. Though fans of the books were torn on his casting, all were shocked to see him then leave.
Finally, with Season 7 of “Sons of Anarchy” in production, Hunnam is speaking out about the decision. “I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job of playing Christian Grey,” he reportedly tells Life & Style, “otherwise I wouldn’t have taken it on in the first place.”
Ultimately it just wasn’t meant to be, which is something Hunnam struggled with. “When you put the time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it’s heartbreaking not to be able to play him,” he says. “It was definitely kind of heartbreaking having to say goodbye to that character and not bring it to life.”
There are no hard feelings, though. In fact, Hunnam adds, “If they invite me to the premiere, I will go and see it there. If not, I’ll go and buy some tickets on opening night.”
