NBC announced the first cast member for “Peter Pan Live,” its next live musical. At the 2014 summer TV press tour, chairman Bob Greenblatt announced that Christopher Walken will play Captain Hook.
“He’s one of the most unique actors in our business,” Greenblatt says. “He might really just be a song-and-dance man at heart.”
More information about other cast members and key details from the musical are coming soon, but it’s clear Greenblatt is enthusiastic about Walken’s involvement. “He always comes to play. We’re thrilled to have him on board ‘Peter Pan,” he says. “This might be the first tap-dancing Captain Hook you’ve ever seen.”
Greenblatt confirms to critics that he is looking for a female character to play the lead role of Peter Pan, and that it could have gone to Kristen Bell if she hadn’t had a scheduling conflict.
“We’ve actually had several women who wanted to do it but they’re either busy or their schedules don’t work. It’s not like we can film this at any time,” he says. “I need that person from Aug. 5 to Dec. 5 and so that knocks out the Kristen Bells of the world — who is someone that I talked to about doing it and she was interested, but she’s doing “House of Lies.'”
He adds, “It’s tricky finding the right person, but we’re actually close.”
“Peter Pan Live” will air live on Dec. 4, 2014 on NBC. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who executive produced “The Sound of Music Live,” are returning in the same capacity.
