Though Kevin Smith has been planning to film “Clerks 3″ for some time, he’s hit a snag in the road. After presenting the project to The Weinstein Company, they’ve decided not to finance the threequel.
Smith shared the news himself in an interview with Screen Daily (via Variety). “[The Weinsteins] passed,” he explains. “I went in with a $6 million budget and they were like, ‘Oh no, Kevin. This is too high.’ Bob offered us distribution, but they weren’t going to finance it.”
It’s interesting to note that the company financed “Clerks 2″ in 2005 for $5 million. It went on to gross $26 million in theaters.
In the meantime, Smith isn’t waiting around for the money to magically appear. The “Comic Book Men” host is preparing to release his horror movie “Tusk” and is plotting a spinoff called “Yoga-Hosers.” “Like ‘Tusk’, [‘Yoga-Hosers’] sprang out of a podcast. There are two characters in a convenience store in ‘Tusk’ that you see for five minutes, very much Rosencrantz and Guildenstern,” Smith says. “I’ve built a whole movie around them and I have brought one of the other characters from ‘Tusk’ back.”
“Tusk” is expected to hit theaters in the fall.
