Hey Marvel Cinematic Universe gods, are you paying attention? Robert Downey Jr. wants to appear on “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD,” and someone somewhere needs to make this happen.
It’s pretty safe to argue that RDJ is the biggest name in the Marvelverse, and he’s also the person who is likely to be phasing himself out sooner rather than later. (“Iron Man 4” probably isn’t coming any time soon. Sorry.) Because of that, he’s one name who often appears on the list of people who probably won’t be able to find the time to come on the ABC series.
He tells a different story. During a Reddit AMA
to promote his new movie “The Judge,” a fan asked which TV show Downey would “be willing to guest star or do a cameo for.” His answer
was definitive: “Agents of SHIELD.”
“Nothing is impossible,” he writes. “But there might be a fair amount of red tape involved in something like that. I love Clark Gregg, and am pleased the show is doing so well.”
There is one fairly obvious and perfect use of Downey’s Iron Man in “Agents of SHIELD”: Resolving the fact that Gregg’s Director Phil Coulson isn’t still dead like the Avengers believe following Coulson’s death in “The Avengers.” If Downey really is down to make an appearance, tying up that fairly major loose end would be a great use of him.
Also, this is a sure-fire way to drive up viewership, which is something that “Agents of SHIELD” likely wouldn’t complain about as it continues through its very, very good
second season. The cast is just as excited about the possibility of RDJ joining the series as the rest of the Marvel fanbase is.
“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
