Update: Original “Xena: Warrior Princess” star Lucy Lawless says the report of the series being rebooted is nothing more than a rumor at this point. “Sorry, friends! news of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor,” she tweets. I’d love it to happen one day but it’s still in the wishful thinking stage.”
The original story is below.
Though it’s been 14 years since the last new episode of “Xena: Warrior Princess” aired in 2001, star Lucy Lawless is still championing the show’s return. Now she may get her wish.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a reboot of the six-season-long series is in the works at NBC. TSam Raimi and Rob Tapert, producers of the original series, are developing the project, which is slated for a 2016 debut.
It’s unclear how original star — and Tapert’s wife — Lucy Lawless will fit into the new series. Lawless recently spoke with Den of Geek about her own efforts to bring the character back.
“The fans really do want that, and I’ve met some people who’ve crowdfunded some things, and I’m just like, ‘Why don’t we just do that?'” she says.
A source tells THR that those involved in the project want Lawless involved in front of the camera, as well as behind the scenes.
The actress will next be seen on Starz’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” which is also produced by Raimi and Tapert. That series premieres on Oct. 31.
