Just two days after Celine Dion’s husband, Rene Angelil, passed away after a battle with cancer at the age of 73, there is more sad news for the global superstar singer. Her brother Daniel passed away from cancer on Saturday (Jan. 16), according to France’s Agence QMI.
Daniel, 59, was one of Dion’s 13 siblings — he was the eighth of 14 children; Celine is the youngest. He had been battling cancer of the throat, tongue and brain and was hospitalized prior to Angelil’s death.
“He was ready and he no longer suffers. It was serene,” says his sister Claudette Dion.
Daniel is survived by his mother, Theresa, the other Dion siblings, two children and two grandchildren.
The funeral for Angelil will be held Friday, Jan. 22 in Montreal’s Notre Dame Basilica, the same church where Dion and Angelil were married in 1994. There is no word yet about the funeral for Daniel.
After Angelil’s passing, Dion canceled her performances at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. She is scheduled to return Feb. 23.
UPDATE: Dion’s team has posted an obituary for Daniel. A visitation is being held Jan. 23 and a funeral will follow a couple days after.
