It may be a silly question, but it’s one we’re left asking after viewing the way Sunday’s (July 10) episode of “Preacher” went down. Since sending Eugene to hell, it’s very evident that Jesse (Dominic Cooper) has let Genesis get the best of him. Having a huge power like that just lurking in your chest can do something to your body’s chemistry — we assume — and after watching his shifting bravado, we feel that Jesse Custer needs a pretty stern wakeup call.

Cue everyone’s favorite Irish vampire, Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun). At least, we all know he’s a vampire … and Tulip (Ruth Negga) knows he’s a vampire. But Jesse? Jesse don’t know nothin’. We can’t fault Cassidy for trying — the man did admit his true nature multiple times. And after witnessing Jesse wish away Eugene (Ian Colletti) into the proverbial cornfield below, something in Cas snaps.

He may have been getting emotional over Tulip recently but given his own real lack of family in this world, it seems that Jesse’s actions tapped a dark spot in Cassidy’s psyche. In a dramatic move calling for Jesse to bring Eugene back from the fires of hell, Cassidy tosses him a fire extinguisher, strips off half his clothes and steps into the sun. That’s one way to come out of the vampire closet!

So, did “Preacher” kill off Cassidy? We really hope not. It wouldn’t make sense, given the overall comic-book story this series is based on. He’s a main player in Jesse and Tulip’s lives. But given how Sam Catlin has been shifting around the plot points from the books, it goes without saying that we’re a little worried. If Jesse didn’t leave him to burn, it seems the two “best friends” have some serious issues left to work out.

“Preacher” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMc.
