Tuesday (July 26) in Philadelphia, the Democratic National Convention was brought to life by a groundbreaking woman. Walking onstage to applause, she excited the crowd, spoke of the importance of women’s issues and rebuked the candidacy of Donald Trump. Nope, we’re not talking about Hillary Clinton but instead … Elizabeth Banks.
Her emcee-like duties on night two of the DNC may just serve as something of a coming-out party for Banks, who has already established herself in Hollywood as a talented actress, producer (“Surrogates”), director (“Pitch Perfect 2”) and voice talent (“The Lego Movie”). Here, she is showing herself to be a hilarious live speaker as well. Then again, it’s hard to have anything but love for a performance that begins by spoofing Donald Trump’s silhoutetted RNC appearance.
Just like The Donald, Banks began by standing in silhouette as smoke billowed and Queen’s “We Are The Champions” played. Then, she drew an uncanny comparison between the Republican presidential nominee and her most famous character.
“Some of you know me from ‘The Hunger Games,’ in which I play Effie Trinket — a cruel, out-of-touch reality TV star who wears insane wigs while delivering long-winded speeches to a violent dystopia,” Banks smiles. “So when I tuned into Cleveland last week, I was like, ‘Uh, hey, that’s my act!’”
Later in the evening, Banks’ jokes included her love of drinking mai-tai’s in IKEA — even her tweets were hilarious. In many ways, Banks’ inclusion in the DNC may have been more on-point than any other speaker, as here was a talented woman who had built an impressive career in a predominantly male industry.
So, should Banks be considered as host for one of next season’s many Hollywood awards shows? To paraphrase Hillary Clinton: We’re with her.
