Lin-Manuel Miranda’s time on “Hamilton” has come to an end and apparently so had his iconic ponytail.

Directly after his last show as Alexander Hamilton (and a truly beautiful final curtain call), Miranda took out the scissors and chopped off the hair he’d been growing for nearly two years while playing the role.

He showed up to his own after-party with a sleek new look and tweeted out a picture of the chopped pony with the caption: “Teach ’em how to say goodbye.” Naturally, we’re heartbroken.

While the move is understandable considering all the upcoming work Miranda will be doing that does not require the extra hair — “Mary Poppins” doesn’t seem like the type of movie for a man-bun — we know we’re not alone when say too soon, Miranda. Too soon.

“Hamilton” fans were already dealing with the triple-blow of losing Phillipa Soo, Leslie Odom, Jr., and Miranda from the show Saturday (July 10) night, and the news that Miranda had decided to sheer his beloved locks did not go over with the on-edge fanbase.

Whether you love or hate the #Hamilcut, you have to admit that it’s the end of an era.

Now all that’s left to wonder about is whether Miranda will grow his hair back out for his promised, eventual return to the role of Hamilton. We’ve got a feeling fans are going to be on hair-watch for that one. If Miranda ever misses a cut, no doubt rumors of his return will spark immediately.
