It’s no secret that “The Secret Life of Pets” is crushing it at the box office, even maintaining its first place position over the release of the “Ghostbusters” reboot. The goofy adventures of cats, dogs, bunnies and even guinea pigs have audiences flocking to theaters, and critics agree that it’s the perfect summer movie for kids and adults alike.
Naturally, success like this has us thinking about sequels, and while no official word has come down from Universal about whether Max (Louis C.K.) and Duke (Eric Stonestreet) will be back for more excursions in the Big Apple, that doesn’t mean we can’t get the ball rolling.
“The Secret Life of Pets” introduced a whole host of interesting animal characters and subplots, and most of them are gold mines for potential sequels. Such as…
Duke’s former owner
We absolutely refuse to believe that sweet old man who raised Duke is dead. Just … no. As cute as it was to see Duke settle into his new home with Max, we’re kind of dying for a sequel where the two dogs find out that Fred is actually alive, and they team up to find him somewhere in the city.
Pops & Chloe’s forbidden romance
Yeah, it’s weird, but what part of a movie about talking animals isn’t weird? Chloe’s (Lake Bell) hilarious sarcasm and Pops’ (Dana Carvey) strange attraction to her is just too good an opportunity to pass up. A sequel about inter-species romance might be a big ask, but we figure if an entire movie about the Minions can get made, this idea is totally doable.
The sewer strays
We’d honestly take a spinoff or a prequel about the sewer strays and how they came to be an organized anti-human hate group called “The Flushed Pets.” That’s a lot of back story we’re missing, and if Kevin Hart is willing to reprise his role as Snowball, then there’s really nothing that can stop this movie from happening.
